Introduction

In January 1973, Jennings and his band the Waylors were booked into Max’s Kansas City, a nightclub better known for punk and rock acts than country music. According to a CMT episode of Inside Fame, he warned the jaded rock audience, “We sure hope you like it, but if you don’t like it you better keep your mouth shut, ’cause we will kick your ass,” and when the crowd retorted, “Who the hell are you?”, Jennings coolly replied, “I’m Waylon goddamn Jennings,” immediately commanding respect and silence. A bootleg clip of that night distributed by On Air confirms the electric tension in the room before his opening chord.

While not documented in mainstream sources, an enduring piece of outlaw country lore tells of Jennings arriving at a college event where a student brawl had broken out. Rather than resort to force, he simply launched into “I’m a Ramblin’ Man,” and by the time his recognizable riff filled the air, the combatants paused in stunned attention, then dispersed in confusion and camaraderie.

These two episodes underscore Jennings’ legacy as both a fearless showman and a powerful communicator whose presence and music transcended boundaries and diffused tension on and off stage

I’ve been down the Mississippi
Down through New Orleans, yes, I have
I’ve played in California
There ain’t too much I haven’t seen, no, there ain’t
Lord, I’m a ramblin’ man
Don’t fool around with a ramblin’ man
Left a girl in West Virginia
Up there where that green grass grows, yes, I did
Got a girl in Cincinnati
Waitin’ where the Ohio River flows, poor girl
I’m a ramblin’ man
Don’t give your heart to a ramblin’ man
You’d better move away
You’re standin’ too close to the flame
Once I mess with your mind
Your little heart won’t beat the same
Lord, I’m a ramblin’ man
Don’t mess around with any ol’ ramblin’ man, better not
Well, up in Chicago, I was known as quite a boy, yes, I was
Down in Alabama, they call me the man of joy, still do
Yeah, I’m a ramblin’ man
Don’t fall in love with a ramblin’ man
You’d better move away
You’re standin’ too close to the flame
Once I mess with your mind
Your little heart won’t beat the same
Lord, I’m a ramblin’ man
Don’t mess around with any ol’ ramblin’ man
